As the story goes, Andrew P. Hill photographed “The Giant” redwood in 1900. The land’s owner demanded Hill either pay for the right to view the trees or destroy the photos and negatives, but Hill refused. Inspired to preserve the trees for generations to come, he went on to co-found the Sempervirens Club, and to campaign for California Redwood Park, now known as Big Basin State Park.
Today, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park offers one of the easiest walks with giant trees in the region. The park is smaller than Big Basin, but easier to access — and usually less crowded.
I’d been learning to use Filmic Pro, a Moment wide-angle lens, and a DJI Osmo 3 gimbal in preparation for a week-long video vacation. This was the first video I used all of these together. The gimbal had trouble balancing the heavy lens, and I had to get creative for a few shots.
